The arrangement hitherto made for transmitting the quarterly returns of receipts and disbursements is only a temporary measure.

I have therefore addressed a separate despatch to you on the subject of the expenses incurred in regard to Mr. Canning's children.

I think that for the future it will be more convenient that the quarterly returns are sent in different dispatches, each class of return having a separate covering dispatch.

Reference No. 3369. Gov: inf? No. 59-26 March 1868.

RECEIVED MAR 20 1868

Treasury Chambers, Whitehall, W., 19 March 1868.

With reference to an observation in the last paragraph of your letter of the 25 Feb. 1868, I am commanded by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to acquaint you that the Paymaster General has been authorized to transfer to the account of the Crown Agents, at the Bank of England, from the Vote for "China, Japan, &c." the sum of £92 11/5, and £131/6/9, being the repayment & expenses incurred by the Colony of Hongkong in sending to this country the Widow and Children of the late W. Canning, one of the Stewards of the Ship "Marmion".

I am, Sir, Your obedient Servant, Geo. A. Hamilton.
